Hi @TerryTeachout1, hi @iamfujimura, we collected $322.49 for the Hilary Teachout grant! I have a question. People sent us the money to our PayPal money pools. Is it possible to send it on to you via PayPal? I don't see that option here: iamculturecare.com/donate?fbclid=…
If we could do that, we'd save on bank fees. Otherwise, I'd have to transfer the money from PayPal to my personal bank account, then pay with my Visa card, or make a bank-to-bank transfer. I'd rather see the money go to its intended recipients than to our banks.
And I'm pretty sure the best way to do it would be PayPal-to-PayPal. Are you set up for that at all?

(Not that you don't know how to do your job without my advice, mind you. I don't mean to micromanage. I *absolutely love* the Atlantic--although I'm still sorry you didn't keep Kevin Williamson. That unfortunate imbroglio aside, it is truly my favorite magazine.)

Friend: "The coalescing of regional blocs within the United States has really alarmed me. I think we are about to take a plunge."

Me: "Why?"
Friend: Left-wing states will adopt a passive-resistance/coalition policy against DC so long as DJT is in power. Congress is supposed to have oversight over state-to-state pacts, the combination of the state delegations and Dem. House majority will nullify any effort to that end.
Friend: It will effectively be an ungoverned process.

Now, say Joe Biden becomes President in January 2021—do the states persist in their coalitions? Probably not in the short term…but it’s sort of like the Stamp Act Congress--

The nested one--if his explanation is correct--suggests that among the concepts we might think about as we look for systemic explanations are "regulatory capture" and "rent-seeking." Nothing new about either of these ideas, but we may need new means to address these problems.
The decline in written record-keeping (and in the skills required to keep written records) is, I am intuitively convinced, an essential aspect of the problem. But it's not likely to be one single problem--it's a host of problems.
They're not going to be fixed by electing a different president, though many problems *will* be helped by that. We need to look at the systemic problem of bureaucratic incompetence, and we need to stop looking at it through the two reignant ideological paradigms--
