from social reinforcement of external displays and ritual. Strong religious beliefs doesn't stem from personal grace as the Protestants assume but rather rigid enforcement of pointless laws to delineate insider from outsider. The more difficult to adhere to, the stronger the
the social pressure by peers to meet them, the stronger the religious feeling. It's why the most sectarian and socially separatist Jews are the most prolific while their secular kin die out. It is why cults are so effective because they demand so much from the individual cultist.

selling cigarettes and booze everywhere and making them eat non halal foods. By obliterating social differences and the external markers of faith and separateness, you decrease religious intensity and create social norms less at odds with non Muslims and thus lower frictions.
