Two indisputable FACTS:

"Master and Commander" has one of the most beautifully curated and timed soundtracks of pretty much any military movie

It is a CRIME that no more movies from that series have been made
Master and Commander might have to be my Sunday movie watching experience

Hm
It's settled. Gonna watch Master and Commander. You're welcome to join me for it at 2 PM EST
Well then. Off we go
Ah, the Surprise. The Dear Old Surprise

It's the little details in this that just make this movie. Like the names of the guns on the carriages.
The flash of the guns before you hear the sound - just, so, perfect

And Tom Pullings is perfect. Tom Pullings is ALWAYS perfect
The sheer - painful - agonizing wait before firing, while getting pummeled. This movie captures all of it so perfectly in just flashes of action
This is one of the few movies where the sounds - gunfire, creaking, or even just silence - are as critical to the story as the picture

The stillness of the sea, contrasted with the very living ship itself, with all her sounds and movement
Maturin's constant refusal to ever grasp naval customs or terminology is a delight
Dammit, I want Madeira and toasted cheese now
The "lesser of two weevils" scene is such a perfect snapshot of the Aubrey-Maturin relationship

I only wish they'd included the "curtailed" joke that Maturin made, that Jack quoted for like, every book after that one
Gawd

Look at the Surprise

She's beautiful with every inch of sail pressed

Lovely shot of Jack's brass nines, with the flintlock priming
The storm is somehow more terrifying than the battle - I imagine that's about right

This, this right here - this is the reason I'm Army. The earth won't try to swallow me up of its own fancy
Perfect choice of music for the utter heartbreak that is this scene of having to cut the line

It's just gutting
Just like the Corelli piece over the open ocean

It's the type of musical and visual pairing that engages multiple senses and brings out something more than the whole
The ascending crescendo of the Bach piece combined with Maturin's marvelling at new species is just... Perfection
The scene between Maturin and Blakeney is lost on those who don't understand Stephen's fascination with beetles
A lovely Hobbes vs Locke argument right here in the captain's cabin
Damn Marines, always shooting everything

Figures
That Jack Aubrey NEVER leaves off a chase makes his decision to do so for Maturin all the more touching and the reason people follow him literally anywhere
You still can't convince me that anyone actually knows what's going on in cricket

It's an international conspiracy
Little Blakeney chewing out Awkward Davies is a charming touch

Patrick O'Brian knew character writing, that's for sure
Tom Pullings for the prize shot

Raking her

Goddam

That's butchery
Ship combat is just...a whole extra level of 19th century brutality

Nowhere to maneuver

Nowhere to run.

Omg Blakeney with the carronade. Genuine smasher indeed.
That whole burial at sea scene

All the feels.

So many damn feels
That may actually be a perfectly made film. Every time I watch it I find something else that makes it even better

Thanks for watching it with me today, all those who joined in!
