In light of the MI lawmaker who wore the Confederate flag face mask, Republicans need to get their story straight. You can't rail about how the Confederates were Dems, fighting for slavery/white supremacy (both true), while adopting that symbol now & saying its abt states rights
Fact is, the CSA by their own admission was about slavery & white supremacy above all. The only state's right they cared about was the "right to own people" one...their own documents prove it. NOW the GOP sits back and says nothing as their supporters hoist that flag at rallies..
Of course there really wasn't an ideological shift. The Dems of that era were conservatives (seeking to preserve existing hierarchies of power) while the GOP was more progressive, seeking to challenge them. The parties changed but it was always the right that hoisted that flag...
