Just got this notification on iOS implying the app DOESN’T work properly on iPhone unless you have the #covidsafe app open and phone unlocked. No mention in the documentation about a ‘power saver’ mode? Simple ‘fix’? Turn the phone upside down of course. 🙄 ⁦@SaysSmithy
People will think they need to turn on iOS’s Low Power Mode, which as @arielbogle has pointed out, could make the functionality worse! At best @GregHuntMP & @stuartrobertmp don’t understand the technical detail. At worst is irresponsible implying that this app will work on iPhone
France, Germany, the UK & Singapore have been unsuccessful in asking Apple to lift the restriction on continuous Bluetooth scanning while the app isn’t open on screen - how is the Australian app different having solved this iOS privacy based limitation? businessinsider.com/france-uk-appl…
There is something @ausgov isn’t telling us here & it could have major risks in people believing this app will work. iOS has 54% penetration in Australia, so if #covidsafe doesn’t work on it the app will fail. @leighsales @David_Speers @SabraLane @TimBiggs @SaysSmithy @arielbogle
If #covidsafe works while your iPhone is locked, as @GregHuntMP said, why does the app have the exact same 'screen saver' feature as Singapore's failing TraceTogether app? (turn your phone upside down) Only difference is that @ausgov isn't telling us this! @arielbogle @SaysSmithy
Researchers from @uwanews have confirmed that the #COVIDSafe app DOES NOT WORK properly on iPhones, if at all, unless the app is open, on screen, unlocked. This is not how people use iPhones - users will get annoyed and delete the app before there’s a fix. scimex.org/newsfeed/exper…
Concerning that before launch, the website DID say you needed to have #covidsafe open on iPhone screen & unlocked, so @ausgov knew this. @GregHuntMP then said this wasn’t the case, & it was changed, for launch! Then they backtracked. Great @TimBiggs piece: smh.com.au/technology/mix…
Battery usage for the #covidsafe iPhone app, it shows as remarkably low (0%). Could this perhaps be because it’s not actually doing anything (if not open & phone unlocked)? Shows 1min of background activity (my understanding is apps can run for 5mins after not open or locked).
8,462 diligent, trusting Australians rated the #covidsafe iPhone app 4.3 stars on the iOS App Store. In contrast, Singapore’s TraceTogether app got 2.4 stars - because their government was fully transparent & clearly told them the app needs to be open & unlocked to work property.
This is the home screen of the iPhone #covidsafe app “There’s NOTHING ELSE you have to do, except leave the app running and keep Bluetooth on”.

Oh, EXCEPT keeping the app ON SCREEN & your phone UNLOCKED at ALL TIMES.

Very dangerous false sense of security for users. @GregHuntMP
