THREAD: The new coronavirus has sickened thousands of America’s first responders and killed dozens. Many who have recovered are going back to work — back to the crime scene, back into the ambulance, back to the jail.

Here are some of their stories.

@AP While on solo patrols around Houston, Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Ravin Washington now has to rely on a mask and gloves in addition to her badge and gun to stay safe.

“It’s like you’re risking your life even more now.”
FDNY Paramedic Alex Tull feels out of breath after walking up a few flights of stairs and has a cough that just won’t quit. He fears his nagging cough might infect his partner or their patients.
@AP Aurora, Illinois, Police Chief Kristen Ziman likely contracted the virus during one of the meetings where officials strategized to keep others safe.

“If we had to be the sacrificial lambs … then I will gladly take it any day.”
Los Angeles County sheriff’s custody assistants Christopher Lumpkin and Sonia Munoz likely contracted the coronavirus working shifts in the 184-bed inmate hospital ward at the Twin Towers jail.

“I have to go back to the lion’s mouth,” Munoz said.
