So much of my DH is STILL #digped & daily DH editorial duties on *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities* (59 authors, people!) and a forthcoming Syllabus Journal special cluster (yay for pushing out almost-done pubs for our authors when e/t is getting severely delayed) #dayofdh2020 cover of digital pedagogy i...
That means a lot of my DH is stuff that doesn’t get seen - *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities* goes a long way to correct that with #digped & one of the key reasons @mkgold @FrostDavis & I wrote the intro w/a history of the project bit.ly/2KNiSQs #DayofDH2020
@mkgold @FrostDavis It’s also why we begin at the beginning — 2010 — by chronicling 1st convos about this project bw me & @jenterysayers that produced a bunch of #digped workshops & a (not accepted) book proposal (w/the response from publisher that DHers won’t be interested in #digped ) #DayofDH2020 text of introduction to dig...
Prior to these workshops w/ @jenterysayers & our unsuccessful book proposal (or maybe simultaneously?), I had been about to submit an article defining #digped to Blackwell’s update AND submitted my draft abt DH @ non-teaching inst to the 1st @dhdebates #dayofdh2020
@jenterysayers @dhdebates Well, my stepfather was dying of cancer that year & e/t went to hell. Blew thru Blackwells deadline & missed a GIGANTIC opportunity. Then, my submitted draft for @dhdebates on my brand of #digped (which we didn’t call it that then) was eviscerated by peer reviewers #DayofDH2020
I couldn’t get my shit together + my dept had upended my tenure/promotion bid - I didn’t feel like fighting a/t, so I pulled my @dhdebates article & placed it w/ Polymath bc I wanted my style of non-research DH to be accepted as is bit.ly/2JqoCl9 #DayofDH2020 polymath article landing page
@dhdebates My brand of DH = borne out of necessity to align w/my institution. I fought to get #digped elbow room & for DH to acknowledge it — *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities* was borne out of this necessity & @jenterysayers was a grt instigator in our rogue project #DayofDH2020
@dhdebates @jenterysayers But what took so long w/ *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities*? Well, 59 authors + 590 permissions + asking authors/curators to write in a style that’s v. different about #digped - no reflective 1st person essays. Just STUFF of teaching - like @lizlosh keyword, Affect #DayofDH2020 Liz Losh’s keyword Affect f...
@dhdebates @jenterysayers @lizlosh …and we are still going w/final corrections in on DPiH (bc we released early to help w/ #CovidCampus ) - what does that entail? So far, it’s more than 400 corrections from 50 of our curators + site functionality proofing w/ @MLAnews @annetiquate #dayofdh2020 corrections log
@dhdebates @jenterysayers @lizlosh @MLAnews @annetiquate DPiH editorial duties @ this stage: track down & convince 59 curators to make corrections in log; approve corrections for @MLAnews ; @annetiquate approves on MLA end or asks ? ; eds go thru ? & respond; MLA changes on website; s/o proofs that change - all while LIVE #dayofdh corrections log
85% of DPiH editorial duties = communicating & working w/our wonderful curators & playing whack-a-mole w/ link rot! It’s been 2 mtgs/mnth since 2016 (1/mnth 2012-2016). Countless hrs on GitHub. Rdg, proofing 800pp of downloaded Git work b4 submission to @annetiquate #dayofdh2020
Loads of editors’ meetings abt crafting emails & establishing infrastructure for tracking the work on this behemoth (59!! authors). Pushing for change of things like NOT making invisible those 2-6 authors in a works cited entry w/ “et al” #dayofdh2020
…I’m sensitive to that because tho I was an originator of this project, my name falls 3rd. But, we decided early on to alpha our editors’ names in all pubs….that means I’m an “et al” - it chafes on me sometimes bc I have an entire career of fighting for recognition #dayofdh2020
These are only few details of overwhelming workload for *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities* and its origins & why we fought so hard for this project, bumps and all. If interested in how we define #digped , take a look at the intro bit.ly/2VNMzYg #dayofdh2020
..and we wouldn’t have gotten here to open access DPiH without back up — @kfitz , the original back up for risky things @MLAnews gave way to working v closely w/ @terrainsvagues @MLAnews before they both moved on to do even bigger things #dayofdh2020
@kfitz @MLAnews @terrainsvagues @FrostDavis & I gave the 1st workshop on *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities already ! It’s buggy, but we’re fixing that as we go bit.ly/2yCXrPB #dayofdh2020 #dayofdh2020
@kfitz @MLAnews @terrainsvagues @FrostDavis I *still* regret not pushing myself to finish those #digped articles for Blackwells DH vol and @dhdebates - I think that hurt my DH career in 2011. BUT, I was teaching 4 courses/sem, battling for tenure/promotion (see blog for that saga), AND yelling abt #digped #dayofdh2020
@kfitz @MLAnews @terrainsvagues @FrostDavis My DH career turned out alright 😊 But, I won’t win any DH or pub awards for editing *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities* — that’s ok (I think?). BC we built it to acknowledge teaching as scholarship, & we got that ackn for about 700 of y’all bit.ly/3algquY #dayofdh2020
As a Full Professor, I’m not suddenly going to produce massive DH projects (tho I dream). I’m still @SJSU & teaching. Now, my gig incorporates project management, a massive invisible portion of DH #digped — as well as network building, esp in local SF Bay Area! #dayofdh2020 day of digital humanities p...
Admittedly, still think of myself as woe begotten powerless asst prof who got trammeled in prof adv shenanigans. But taking @kfitz & @terrainsvagues exs, I make sure to pull up those behind me instead of pulling up the ladder, which is 1 of the mst imp lessons of DH #dayofdh2020
..this is my brand of DH these days - a mix of essential skills (no, you don't HAVE to know how to code to do DH!) #dayofdh2020 Image
Oh but wait! One more thing! @mkgold @FrostDavis & I anticipated anyone who might think #digped is too hard! Take a look at our “Obstacles” section to help think abt how to justify #digped #dayofdh2020 bit.ly/3c0clxO obstacles section from digi...
