The coronavirus may have killed more people in the U.S. than is officially known: Total deaths in 7 hard-hit states are nearly 50% above normal, CDC data shows.

That's 9,000 more deaths than were reported as of April 11 in official counts. nyti.ms/3bOQkSM
In New York City, the home of the biggest outbreak, more than 3 times the number of people died — nearly 12,000 deaths — from March 8 through April 11 than the same time period over the past 5 years. nyti.ms/3bOQkSM
In New York State, excluding New York City, 4,200 more people have died than normal between March 8 through April 11.

In New Jersey, the death toll is even higher: 172% of the normal number, or more than 5,000 additional deaths. nyti.ms/3bOQkSM
5 other states — Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and Michigan — have all seen more people die between March 8 through April 11 than normal over the past 5 years. Together, it's nearly 6,000 more deaths. nyti.ms/3bOQkSM
It’s difficult to know whether the differences between the number of people who have died and the official counts of coronavirus deaths reflect an undercounting of virus deaths or a surge in people dying from other causes. It’s probably a mix of both. nyti.ms/3bOQkSM
The data is partial and most likely undercounts the recent death toll significantly. But it still illustrates how the coronavirus is causing a surge in deaths — and is our best glimpse into how the coronavirus is affecting normal patterns of survival. nyti.ms/3bOQkSM
