THREAD/Trump's handling of this crisis makes sense when you consider the thinking of a profit-driven business guy (as opposed to someone who had dedicated themselves to PUBLIC service), and ought to invalidate the "let's run government like a business" shit forever...
/ As a business guy, Trump knows it's important to downplay bad news about your "product." Even if the truth may come out, you deflect, deny, evade...sadly, his product now is, in his mind, America (or more directly, America under HIS leadership)...
/ And from a private sector perspective, cheerleading your product is basic salesmanship...reality doesn't matter. Marketing is all illusion anyway. So if there's a crisis you can't let people know or admit it...even though doing so and acting swiftly would make you heroic...
/ Bc you're thinking short run brand damage (quarterly reports, daily stock value, etc) not long term reputation...Trump idolizes old school guys like Lee Iacocca, for instance, who knew the Ford Pinto was a death trap but said nothing, settled lawsuits and moved on...
/ Ultimately heading up Chrysler even after the Ford debacle, and keeping his reputation intact...so to Trump, when he heard that something was terribly wrong w/C19 he couldn't accept it or let it be known that it was a problem bc he feared it would reflect badly on HIS brand..
/ If he'd been someone whose life had been about public service his mindset would have been different. It would have been about accountability, leadership & telling the truth, rather than marketing, illusions & lies (which is what he's used to telling people to sell himself)...
/ This is reason # 2,576 why we don't need business people to run the government (I mean, they have plenty of influence already but I mean formally hiring them to run it via elections)...there is a huge difference between profit seeking business folks and public servants...
/ And even if u believe in the profit system, generally, you should be willing to see the truth of the notion of staying in one's lane...we need public minded people to run govt. Let business folk sell us their goods, but leave governing to people with more communal motives...
