Day 28 of @NavigatorSurvey tracking poll: Negative impressions of Trump's press conferences go up after bleach comments. 56% have negative view, including 85% of Democrats, 60% of Independents, and 21% of Republicans.
Overall, Trump approval on the pandemic remains low, so no doubt that the Trump temper-tantrums about his poll numbers that were reported yesterday are true.
New today, we laid out two cases against Trump for his current response and asked people which bothered them more. By a pretty clear margin, that Trump's words and actions are putting people's health/lives at risk is more concerning than lack of leadership and plan.
In looking at various components of that argument, Trump's promotion of dangerous medical advice in the wake of his bleach comments is most concerning, though ignoring experts and pushing to hard to open the country are at similar levels. Egging on protesters further behind.
We also took a look at Trump's blame game on the pandemic. Yes, it is true that the public is willing to place blame on China, but ending your analysis there would be missing the whole story. Everyone except Republicans place blame on Trump too, and on the next slide...
...Here we see that 58% of the public sees Trump's blame game as a deflection from his own missteps. 42% (i.e. his core base) sees him as trying to hold people responsible. Independents go 65%-35% on this one.
Here's another way to look at the Trump/China blame game -- it's a false choice for many people. A plurality of the public blames both Trump and China -- a group that includes lots of Democrats and Independents. Only 36% blame China only. That's the Trump base.
