Shahid Ganj Gurdwara in Lahore, Pakistan has striking resemblance with the #BabriMasjid dispute. The Gurdwara was a mosque until 1799 until Maharaja Ranjit Singh defeated Afghans & captured the city. It was soon converted to a Gurdwara. 1/n
Muslims, in 1925, took a procession to the Gurdwara Shahid Ganj, and police fired at the Muslim crowd. In 1926, however, Muslim League led by MA Jinnah assumed power in Punjab legislative assembly. Muslim members in the assembly presented a resolution 2/n
to give the Gurdwara back to Muslims to start a mosque at the site. MA Jinnah, however, rejected the resolution saying it will open an endless Pandora's box all over India. The Gurdwara remains there till date, with all its dignity. One important fact to remember here is that 3/n
it was proven that it was a Masjid before. Jinnah could have played emotive politics to garner support of Muslims by passing the resolution. He did no. Now coming to the #BabriMasjid verdict: It was brought down to earth by a Hindu mob & before that an idol was placed inside 4/n
The Supreme Court judgement said there is no sign of any Mandir at the site. It says keeping idols was illegal, it also says destroying a mosque was illegal but then it gave the verdict in favour of Mandir, that never existed. 5/n
Moral of the story is that majority community has to always keep their faith, beliefs aside if justice has to prevail. If judgements are given to please faith of Hindu devotees, what happens if majority decides butchering minorities? 6/n
The verdict will always remain a blot on the judiciary of India. People will remember that the apex court surrendered to the beliefs of the majority community. Muslims never broke a law, even while protesting against the destruction. We'll be on the right side of the history.
