The Dragon’s Path (Dagger and Coin series) was apparently sitting on my book pile since 2011, lamentably. It features dragons and banking.

Not enough dragons and not enough banking, but of course I’m going to say that.

Extremely good, and second book so far better than first.
Also features occasionally inspired dialogue, such as this between a hero and old guy whose background the hero only partially knows.

Old guy: *request*
Hero: No.
Old guy: I won’t force you.
Hero: You couldn’t.
Old guy: I could, but I choose not to, and I hope you remember that.
Hero put precisely zero skill points into Genre Savvy.

Almost nobody appreciates how expensive clothes used to be, even as “late” as 200 years ago.

A shirt was once thousands of hours of labor; scarcity logic flows directly from that.

The shirt you can buy at Walmart for ~$2 is a superior artifact along most product dimensions.
Here’s a single citation for you: we had a Navy in 1808, right?

Uniform for someone serving it: $25 plus $10 for the overcoat.

Wages for a senior enlisted man: $8. Per month.

This is a very counterintuitive way of looking at the world.

Speaking generally rather than specifically: one generally wants a budget for fraud (or similar negative things) and to spend that budget prudently, not drive to zero.

Socially non-desirable to say in as many words.
“We have below the optimum amount of fraud; which margins are we underperforming at” is a very real conversation to have. Some organizations have incredible social difficulties acknowledging tradeoffs exist and find themselves in unhappy space on N dimensional graph as a result.
I remember a conversation with a lawyer I had when I was six and didn’t really understand for many many years later.

I thought I was a smart kid because I knew his job was winning “cases”, so I asked whether he won all his cases.

Writing for Software Developers launched today.

It's a book which includes both structured practical advice on form factor, writing style, etc, and also interviews with various writers, including @matt_levine and yours truly.
I'll give two obligatory comments:

1) Writing is a professional skill that makes literally every professional more dangerous, in much the same way that learning to code does. I heartily endorse leveling up at it, for everyone.
2) The concept for this book is great as a business, in ways which are not necessarily obvious.

It's an artifact for the consumption of software developers which includes basically no software.

It's a book about writing which intentionally anti-targets 99.99% of writers.
