The education system is essentially a mass child-minding service, a disciplinary institution, or "incarceral habitus" to coin a sociological term - aka, a prison. Its function is less to educate, than to accommodate children to ensure workers are maximally available as labour.
This is where the pressure arises, to "liberate" children from the domestic habitus, regardless of risk, in order to reintegrate control over labour and reassert the claim that only work matters. If too many realise they have other options, and haven't we witnessed...
...an upsurge of inventiveness and dare I say, play, among adults suddenly allowed the freedom to reconsider how they spend their time, other than immersed in employment, at the command of corporations, their every moment "managed" for ends not entirely of their own choosing?

First came a denial that it was a problem at all, then a denial of its depth and gravity. Later came an acceptance of the problem but the stance that responding is too economically costly. And as with the climate crisis, this is no accident.
The well-funded machinery that sowed doubt about climate is now sowing seeds of doubt over the economic and public health response to COVID-19.

A specious abstraction.The future lives you hypothesise won't be exactly as you imagine if gmnts open up all restrictions; a society that allows certain 1000s die now to prevent possible hypothesised future deaths changes its cultural character. Those future lives also change.
A society that witnesses thousands being allowed to sicken and die, with mass graves and overflowing temporary morgues and where preventable deaths are not prevented, becomes something other than the society that applies all resources to heal the sick.
A society with that cultural memory of cruel cold economics prevailing, may actually face greater anomie, greater depression and more suicides and violence as a result, than one that retained compassion for the immediately sick, regardless of their "chances" of recovery.
