a Soviet Bus Stops/Yugoslav Memorials-style coffee table book of shitty Millennium municipal features in British towns and villages
please submit your examples of this uniquely terrible moment in British taste
losing my mind at the Millennium Celebration Monument in Clevedon, Somerset
YES
the "millennium post" in Great Melton, Norfolk
this is the kind of absolutely pointless crap i'm talking about
yes! like that horrible hotel in dubai, but worse, and not even a functioning building
absolutely awful sundials were a particular favourite, for some reason
i can't decide if i hate the low-rent hi-tec ones or the twee folke ones more
yes! these inexplicable whale tails blight the entire nation
good. there should be no pictures of this
have you ever seen anything more hopeless
this was one of the biggest - an entire shit public square - and therefore one of the worst
possibly the worst thing William Hague ever did, and he did a *lot* of bad stuff
huge "stunt advertising for a Transformers video game" energy
impressively shit example of the common "spire/spike" genre of these
important stipulation: these must be"millennium" projects. plenty of terrible public art/weird municipal projects out there but here i wish to commemorate the answers to the question "how should our town greet the year 2000"
visions of bored councillors up and down the country going "maybe something with...a mirror? i dunno, Steve, we've got 4k left in the budget, do you know any welders?"
this is an interesting one because it is Actually Useful, but also, fair
an absolutely perfect instance of the genre. time fixation, bad metalwork, wild claim to be a garden that is not fulfilled: this has it all
perfectly embodies Penge: simple, honest, doesn't have ideas above its station (but, also, shit)
magnificent. disappointing that more of the clock ones aren't digital, given how exciting that still was in the late 90s
points awarded for the sheer goblin vibe of the concept, but deducted for the awful execution
"flooding? in York? doesn't sound like something we'll need to worry about"
this had fibre optic lights! another hugely exciting thing in 2000. also it shares its name with awful american beer
yeah, this one did need some fixing - but once fixed it actually turned out to be great imo
yes i did wonder when this one would come up
someone just tagged an awful trad into this thread so just to be clear, this isn't a thread about how all modern design is terrible, trads can get fucked
the millennium flowerbeds arranged by the councillors of Little Fucklesham are just as bad as the stainless steel spirals in Frammingshite
lost track of all the replies here and am increasingly seeing non-millennium municipal badness, but i am honoured to have stirred this much reflection on the special awfulness of turn-of-the-millennium ~aesthetics~
also: this means all the time capsules we buried are full of hideous shit and future societies who dig them up will (rightfully) despise and pity us
