Okay, I'm going to share my favorite example of this kind of thinking. It was one of the first times I got 100% tired of the continuity bullshit that had taken over my hobby.
This is Sia-Lan Wezz. She was created by artists Adam Hughes to be an example Jedi character in the d20 RPG. Later, she was added to a comic because AH contributed a cover with her, and she died in the pages of that comics.

Got it? Got it.
But wait! Check her Wookieepedia entry! Apparently there's a contradictory account of her death! Oh wow. Well, that sucks, but it happens.

One second. The source is the Galactic Campaign Guide? What?
The GCG is an amazing book! It's one of the best GM aides ever: you have generic maps, cargo generators, lists of example names by species... It's a jewel, and I've been using it for many years!

But... it doesn't contain any fiction, at all. What the...?

Let's check it.
Nothing. Not even an adventure seed or anything. And then, after wondering whether you missed some kind of vignette, you decide to read the pretty nice section on the Hero's Journey at the end of the book.

And there you find this:
Wait, that's it?

That's fucking it. An example using the example characters during a section on gamemastering tips. That was the contradiction.

People contacted Leland asking how this contradiction was going to be fixed. He was as patient as always. I was speechless.
So goodbye to that way of looking at Star Wars being mainstream. And good riddance.
There, some public shaming.

(I was the only one with book, I suspect)
