Watched Howard's End on Netflix. They really do fuck Forster up when they try to put it on screen. It's so twee and harmless.
Might be intrinsic. So much of the joy of his novels comes through the internal life of the characters. On screen it all feels cold.
Wrongheaded too. You can't understand why Margaret would put up with Henry without access to her thoughts.
But even with all that, there should be at least one decent screen version. Instead they go all-in on the crumpets and lose sight of that fiercely empathetic quality he has. Deeply fucking irritating.
