Despite the problems with the ASGs, the railways thought that Garratts that stayed on the rails would be useful. Beyer Garratts had a proven record.

' No.1009 is the only survivor of the QR Garratts and was initially placed on display in the Redbank Locomotive Museum. It was restored to working order at Ipswich Workshops in the mid 1990s and used for excursions for a few years.'

Garrats hauled the Midlander, mainly between Emerald and Bogantungan for some years, In later years the Garratts worked Moura coal trains via Mount Morgan, prior to the opening of the short line to Gladstone.

Suburban railways around Brisbane were not electric until late 1970s hence the range of locos.

D16 (6D16) 4-6-2T (later 4-6-4T)
20 built Walkers 1901/02 #363-382
1904/05 all were rebuilt as 4-6-4T due to tendency to derail as a 4-6-2T.

Two D16s (1935, 375 and 1939, 376) were modified to run with B15 tenders. Classified as B16D, used for freight.

In the 1920s more tank locos were flagged, the D17s.
