Suburban railways around Brisbane were not electric until late 1970s hence the range of locos.

D16 (6D16) 4-6-2T (later 4-6-4T)
20 built Walkers 1901/02 #363-382
1904/05 all were rebuilt as 4-6-4T due to tendency to derail as a 4-6-2T.

Two D16s (1935, 375 and 1939, 376) were modified to run with B15 tenders. Classified as B16D, used for freight.

In the 1920s more tank locos were flagged, the D17s.

D17 75 "Roma St." [n.d.] - Suburban Train approaching Albion Station from the north. The first two vehicles, excursion van and long distance car are not normally part of the suburban set.

Between 1948 and 1952, twelve DD17s were built at North Ipswich as the D16s started to reach end of service life.
Numbers949-954, 1046-1051.
1046, 1047, 1049, 1051 preserved others scrapped.

The first DD17 tank engine was painted black with red lining. The rest of the DD17 tanks were painted blue > nickname ' Blue Baby '.

Brisbane was well served by the D suburban tank locos. It is recorded that at least on one occasion the mighty Sydney Mail (down) was hauled by a D16 when a loco failed at Ipswich!
