"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." That is the motto of the U.S. Postal Service & we see it in action now more than ever.
As millions of people stay home, postal workers continue delivering our mail the despite threat of illness. USPS is not only one of the largest civilian employers, but is also employs critical groups of people in our population. 18% of its workers are veterans; 39% minorities
Postal workers are the people with whom we grew up. They bring us our birthday cards, our college acceptances, absentee ballots & most recently, our relief checks. Every small town has a post office, but not every small town has a FedEx or a UPS.
For just 55 cents a letter, the U.S. postal service connects us in a way no other institution can. But it has struggled to keep up with Fedex & UPS & Amazon which uses them, & lacked innovation to keep up with changing times. The pandemic has only exacerbated these problems
This 250 year-old institution, once run by Benjamin Franklin, may not make it through the summer without financial assistance. Yet Trump refuses to help, calling the agency “a joke” & saying he won’t authorize relief until it raises delivery prices.
The USPS is not just mail & packages. It’s a group of civil servants who have dedicated their lives to their work. It is essential in moments like this when we long to be connected with those far away from us. We can fix its issues, but first we need to help it survive.
