The media are an essential part of society. They are the proverbial glue that sticks governments and the people together, through the transparent, ethical and independent reportage and analysis of developments.

Very importantly therefore, a conducive environment must be provided for our media professionals and institutions through self-censorship, independence, and foundational legislative inclusiveness.

The 2020 World Press Freedom Day, which is being globally celebrated today, gives us the peculiar avenue to appreciate the vital role daily played by the media by further ensuring practical autonomy for our institutions.

And indeed, being the first for our Administration, this is a remarkable day.

I want to appreciate all press men and women in Ogun State, especially during this COVID-19 global health crisis, for their sustained sensitisation initiatives via print, broadcast or the new media.

These contributions have kept our people aware of current developments, and this is appreciated in no small measure.

I urge the media to continue to be guided by the ethics of the noble profession, and shun sentiments, partisanship, and fake or unverified news stories, so that together, we can build a better future.
