My survey on education after COVID-19 received 1,330 responses

Here are the percentages of students transferring to homeschooling from each sector:

Traditional Public: 15%
Private: 16%
Charter: 13%

Here is how the expected changes were captured:

Question 1: "What type of school did your youngest school-aged child attend before the COVID-19 shutdown?"

Question 2: "What type of school will your youngest school-aged child attend after the COVID-19 shutdown?"

15% of the population of children in government schools is about 7.5 million.

If that change actually occurred then the homeschool population would nearly quintuple in size.

Of course, this is NOT a representative sample.

The parents who selected into this survey could be the most likely to switch out of brick-and-mortar schools.

These results are therefore likely upper bound estimates of the actual transfers that will occur.

Although the sample is not representative of all families, this is the first empirical evidence we have estimating the amount of switching between sectors.

The expected losses to brick-and-mortar schools are larger than I expected, even for this nonrandom sample.

Here are the results for the 528 families with children in traditional public schools before the lockdown.

--> Homeschool: 15%

--> Virtual: 3%

Here are the results for the 168 families with children in private schools before the lockdown.

--> Homeschool: 16%
--> Virtual: 4%
--> Traditional Public: 4%

Here are the results for the 67 families with children in charter schools before the lockdown.

--> Homeschool: 13%
--> Private: 3%
--> Traditional Public: 4%
