Criticism of the UK government for not conducting as many tests as capacity allows each and every day is misplaced. A short thread:
Regardless of when exactly the target was hit, the UK now has a capacity to conduct >100,000 tests a day. That is a remarkable achievement, considering where the UK was just a few weeks ago. France, for example, isn't there yet. More importantly it's not just a random number
The WHO said on 30 March that testing at the level of 10 negative tests to one positive should be seen as a general benchmark of a system that's doing enough tests (who.int/docs/default-s…) — on this measure, the UK was falling well short but now isn't
Finally, on hitting capacity every day: Germany has a capacity to conduct more than 140K tests/days (and probably more given sample size rki.de/DE/Content/Inf…), 860K tests/week, but week ending 26 April conducted 467K tests
tldr: governments should be held to account and governments should be transparent in their communications, but criticism just for the sake of it doesn't add much value and imho diminishes accountability overall as it creates noise and confusion
