Between February 20-March 31, in Italy 🇮🇹 there were 25.354 more deaths vs 2015-9 average.

Over the same period, Italy counted 13.710 "official" Covid-19 deaths.

Total excess deaths were nearly twice as high as "official" Covid-19 deaths. (h/t @istat_it) #COVIDー19

The data is all the more staggering since in January and February Italy 🇮🇹 had reported -6.6% deaths vs 2015-9 average (Northern Italy -7.6% | Southern Italy -4.3%).

Until Covid-19 struck, 2020 had been a relatively good year.

The peak of excess deaths occurred ~March 25th - 2 1/2 weeks after the start of the national lockdown

We still don't have data for April. They should be better, though perhaps slightly worse for the South as the epidemic spread across Italy (END)
