Simply put: 3 things
1. We failed to control/screen entry into the country stringently& meticulously— a policy blunder.
2. We did not have adequate testing in the early days— a CDC blunder.
3. Overwhelmed healthcare system & lack of PPE in NY & other hot spots. @chadinabhan

All 3 factors above could have also been mitigated with earlier lockdowns in many states, universal masking, & better contact tracing. @jeremyphoward

China also has less than 5 deaths per million. But I’m not sure of the numbers there. But nevertheless, it is quite low from what we see. Their success was due to lockdown of Hubei province, stringent entry control into country, and the basics: adequate testing, tracing, & PPE.
