Rumors of the death of the EU tend to be exaggerated, but Brexit could conceivably make the path to greater integration easier.
The populists are in retreat in most countries, according to recent polls, and the German political elite seems closer to accepting the need for some greater degree of fiscal integration.
On the other hand, there's still a real danger that the EU becomes a version of the Holy Roman Empire in the 18th century: still there on paper, but moribund.
And in the short run, the ECB cannot match the Fed when it comes to balance sheet expansion, just as EU governments can't match the US when it comes to deficit finance.
