This is an interesting conundrum. Support this crumbling, barely functional, exploitative hegemonic system at your expense because this is the way. Or do something different.
I mean this sincerely. Everyone knows how dysfunctional peer review is, how exploitative journal publishing is. And yet it is the only system we have. Is catastrophic collapse how it will change?
Btw, i cannot recommend @StuartJRitchie's new book enough. Science Fictions (14th July) deals with the fragility of the processes of science are, how ripe they are for exploitation and manipulation, and how the pursuit of truth suffers as a result.
The question that we fail to ask repeatedly while serving this system as it is is this: ‘does this serve science?’
