Yesterday, LUTH informed maids employed as locum staff for the wards that they would henceforth be paid only half their current salaries. They earned N30,000 in March. From April, it will be only N15,000. This is such a saddening development....

...seeing these maids will continue endangering their lives for only a pittance.

They may be at the base of the power pyramid, but they’re also at COVID-19 risk. They clean the wards -- all the blood & fluids in the theatre and the wards. They clear all the waste products.

LUTH’s reason for this pay cut is low patient inflow & reduced income, due to the closure of numerous sections of the hospital save the emergency-related services.

These ppl earned 15k for 12 years (2008-2020). It was only in March that it was raised to 30k after protests.

The affected staff are on contracts funded by a PPP initiative, so they're probably not the most important set of people at LUTH.

But I’m hoping the LUTH mgt can reconsider this pay cut; that extra 15k means so much to these ppl.

Let’s not drive the lowly among us aground!
