Solidarity to @neil_ferguson. He's not a politician. He's a scientist. Who's had his privacy invaded by a newspaper with a pretty clear political agenda. Any country that fails to defend its scientists from political interference frankly doesn't deserve them
Weird, isn't it, how it was the deputy political editor & the political editor who stumbled on this important bedhopping story while not on the phone to SPAD contacts and No 10 advisors
.@neil_ferguson is not employed by govt. He does not make policy. He did not make lockdown rules. He does not decide when they're lifted. And he broke them *in the privacy of his own home*. He is an independent scientist. Honestly, who are we as a country if we don't defend that?

On March 19, multiple people tweeted this at me. The status of COVID-19 had been downgraded. It was no longer a 'high consequence infectious disease'. I didn't retweet it. There has to be some explanation, I thought.

From the @BMJ: 'On 19 March, the status of covid-19 was downgraded from level 4, the highest threat level, to level 3...

This enabled the required standard of PPE to be lowered for staff in hospitals and to nurse patients in non-infectious settings' Image
The threat level was downgraded because of 'information available about mortality rates (low overall)'

The guidance hasn't been updated since March 21.

I can’t sleep so here’s a story in 4 screenshots. We first learned of new ‘Joint Biosecurity Centre’ on Sun. On Tues, that 4 friends of Gove/Cummings appointed to key roles in Cabinet Office. Today we learn ‘Biosecurity’ = counterterror/health mash-up. Based in Cabinet Office

A major surveillance apparatus has literally been set up overnight in the Cabinet Office. At *exactly* same time Gove & Cummings made 4 political appointees - friends - to senior oversight roles in the Cabinet Office. This cannot be ok. @Keir_Starmer needs to be all over this

Um. Did anyone know that the cabinet office has ‘non-exec directors’? 4 new ones, all friends of Cummings: 1) ex commissioner of force that dropped investigation into Vote Leave. 2) Chair of Vote Leave. 3) Digital director of Vote Leave 4) someone else

So to recap, new ‘non-executive director’ of Cabinet Office was chair of organisation found to have committed electoral fraud. And Cabinet Office which last time I checked was part of the Civil Service now has political appointees. Is anyone keeping track of this stuff?
