Let’s talk about “tsundere” and “toxicity.”

If you like those kinds of characters then you’re probably not gonna like this thread so fasten your seatbelts.

(taps mic)

TSUNDERE CHARACTERS ARE TOXIC.
What’s a “tsundere”?

They are characters who mask their feelings of affection and turn them into teasing, rejection, insults, and go all the way up to physical and emotional abuse.
From lighter instances to full on abuse, tsundere characters are toxic. They use any sort of interaction with the person they like/love as an opportunity to cause them embarrassment/pain to get their attention.

But “it’s okay because that means they like you.”
“Boys will be boys,” amirite?
This behavior in anime/manga is so normalized, children who enjoy those stories will imitate those actions because it’s “cool.”

Boys and girls alike learn that “causing upset”=“love,” and then we wonder why DV happens altogether.
Don’t get me wrong, of course we know this is unacceptable as adults and we would never condone this behavior—we’re just enjoying the show! Lighten up, Ishikawa, ffs.

Um, you can like something and still be objective and know when something needs to be criticized.
Yet again I talk about normalization. Showing in media that “causing upset=liking” is hurtful.

I know it’s fiction, but that’s not an excuse. Fiction shapes our worlds, so much so I’m sure nobody would tolerate a Vegeta irl and yet he’s a fan favorite (how, just how).
Be critical—I understand tsundere characters are often adored because they are accompanied by a gorgeous redemption arc, and that speaks to character development, but we need to aware of the toxicity when we see it.
Tsundere characters come in all shapes and forms, from InuYasha, to Yusuke (YYH), to Taiga (ToraDora), to Asuka (Evangelion).

They rank from rudeness and skirt-lifting to physical and emotional abuse.

Know it when you see it.
That’s it, that’s the tweet. I’m not canceling tsunderes and I’m not insulting you by talking about your favorite characters.

I’m just saying—be aware.
