White women claiming to “be Japanese” isn’t appreciating the culture. It’s appropriating it.

You can appreciate Japanese culture by learning the language, the history, the customs, and by actually listening to its people. Her claim that “I’m Japanese and I didn’t know it” is harmful.

“Japanese” isn’t a mask you can put on and take off, it’s not a trend and it’s not “fashion.”

Today, TV Asahi spoke about harassment and doxxing attempts online, which have been increasing recently.

In the comment section of Yahoo!News, about 20K comments out of 320K are deleted every 24h. Online harassment has also been surging in schools.

Why understanding the difference between “racism” and “xenophobia” is key in order to understand systemic discrimination.

A thread (which will make many white people angry). I have seen time and time again that “why does it matter, discrimination is discrimination” and yeah, you’re right, discrimination is bad—but not understanding the root of the hatred does more harm than good.

I’ve told this story before, so apologies if you’ve already read this.

I was 27, working in Japan. My client was this huge multinational, famous and powerful corporation. They were important. I was their liaison in France and afaik they were very happy with my work. In particular, this man in his late 50s-early 60s who was the “boss” (perhaps a manager? I don’t remember) was very kind. I was naive to think he was just impressed at my dedication.

Last week, Sanseidō published the Japanese translation of "The Feminism Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained."

In the translator’s afterword, it says "the translation of this book was done by two non-feminists in order to soften the resistance against the word 'feminism.'"

What? OP also states that this is the first time in this series of Big Ideas (図鑑シリーズ) that the translators have *not* been translated by experts in the field. So why are we actively not listening/reding actual feminists when it comes to feminism?

I am stepping down from the community known as “feminist twitter.” First and foremost, I want to say thank you. Thank you for teaching me values I felt but couldn’t voice, for guiding me, for helping me find myself, and shining a light into what has become my passion: intersectional feminism.

We don't get to police the harm we've inflicted on others.

This is a thread about accountability, apologies, and growth. Good people make bad decisions. Good people fuck up. The people we love who wouldn't hurt a fly will accidentally hurt other people - that's a fact.

And that's okay.

What's sticky is what comes *after* we've been called out.

#性行為強要 (sexual coercion) is trending in Japan.

Sankei Headlines reads: "Woman who had an affair to pay damages after Sexual Coercion case judged fake."

There is a lot to unpack here. What happened:

A man (M) was having an affair with his subordinate (S). She reported him as having coerced her into sex and he was fired from his job at Nissan.

His wife (W) sued S for 10M yen in compensation for damages.

Let’s talk about “tsundere” and “toxicity.”

If you like those kinds of characters then you’re probably not gonna like this thread so fasten your seatbelts.

(taps mic)

TSUNDERE CHARACTERS ARE TOXIC. What’s a “tsundere”?

They are characters who mask their feelings of affection and turn them into teasing, rejection, insults, and go all the way up to physical and emotional abuse.

This video is trending all over Japan Twitter. This is my translation.

⚠️CW: Ableism re: homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse.

I have decided not to take it out because that would be limiting information. I agree with her take to STAY HOME.

"Hello. I am just a single mother who lives in Harlem, NY. In Japan, there is a ton of news about how bad the situation is in NY due to COVID19. It’s really bad. It’s very serious. Every day, more people die. It’s so horrible people are getting depressed."

Why cis folk cannot shrug their shoulders and “separate the author from their work” when it comes to trans rights, JK Rowling, and Harry Potter.

A thread. First of all, let’s talk about privilege.

If you’re a man, you have male privilege.
If you’re white, you have white privilege.
If you’re abled, you have able-bodied privilege.
If you’re cis, you have cis privilege.

(and these are just four small examples)

Okay, let’s talk about the “Michi Kake” health store at Daimaru in Osaka.

They had the brilliant idea (not) to create an optional “I am menstruaring” badge in Japan.

Let’s talk about why this is a problem.

A thread. Last month, this store revealed their plan to allow their staff to wear these badges. They are optional (there is no legal way for these badges to be enforced, obviously).

They show Seiri-chan, a (creepy) character meant to depict periods.
