Vizag is a city of great beauty and great amicability. Most importantly, its folks make you feel relaxed. Somehow, this metro with 2 million people appears like a quaint resort town with good food, good conversation and incredible weather. Living there adds ten years to your life
An observation back home. A Hyderabadi would agree to the faults of his city, Vijayawada chap would admit it is too hot there, Tirupati guy would agree to the water shortage. But a Vizag fellow will never admit that his hometown is anything but paradise. Will defend till the end!
I lived there for two 25 years. You get the sense of peace and warmth here. I think its the perfect mix of sea and the mountains. Everyone cools down. Noone is in a hurry. Noone is in a rush. Its like a Hrushikesh Mukherjee comedy.
i think your blood pressure would drop ten points just by looking at the signboards as the train pulls into Waltair station. People smile for no reason, and smile heartily as they promenade on the beach road and wet their ankles in the salty froth of the sea.
The quintessential Vizag culture influenced by Bengalis, Oriyas and Marwadi folk, remains different as the language itself. Telugu spoken here appears to be the love child of the sweetness of the Godavari delta and the satirical tone from Srikakulam.
The city is a robust mix of the strong and the gentle. The Steel Plant, the Dockyard and the Eastern Naval Command represent the modern while the Simchalam temple and Thotlakonda Buddhist centres are reminders of an ancient time.
DYK that Japanese Aircraft bombed Vizag during the Second World War attacking the harbour and the shipyard. The infamous Pakistani submarine Ghazi was sunk off Vizag's coast during the 1971 war. So we are not averse to the occasional fight
The images coming out of today's gas leak reminds me of the HPCL accidents in 2013 and in 1997 or the Steel Plant accident in 2012 when the city bore the brunt of its own industrialisation. We live with these huge units, in their shadow always.
This is a miraculous city, known to welcome every visitor with a warm heart and a cool breeze. We shall overcome. We shall be strong again.
