Yesterday on the Senate floor, I told the story of an #ImmigrantHealthHero on the frontlines treating COVID-19 patients at Mayo Clinic. While she's saving lives, she's worried she won't be able to stay here to do her work while filling out paperwork to prove she’s “worth keeping"
President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.” These doctors are choosing service over fear. Saving lives, saving someone’s grandma is more important to them than fear.
That’s why I’m leading efforts to reauthorize the Conrad 30 Program which allows foreign doctors trained in the U.S. to work in underserved areas and keep doing their heroic service for our country during this pandemic.
With a bipartisan group of my colleagues, I have asked USCIS to resume streamlined visa processing for immigrant doctors and called on them to waive restrictions for health workers practicing in crisis areas during the pandemic. Lives are at stake — they must act now.
