The C32 worked most passenger trains, occasionally mixed and freight trains. The last regular steam passenger train (Singleton/Newcastle) was hauled by 3246 in 1971.

The initial 50 were built with 6 wheel tenders, the remainder with 8 wheel bogie tenders. Some of initial 50 were given 8 wheel tenders, but a number kept 6 wheel tenders to fit 50' turntables.

All C32s were fitted with superheaters between 1911 and 1939. This improved their performance significantly.
