As built D53s had balance problems > restricted speed. Some had balanced coupled wheels fitted and these were permitted to operate at higher speed on mail & fruit trains.

Close examination shows train was a single carriage (mail?) with box vans. Probably a fast mail & fruit train.

brakes failed on a freight train coming down the Cowan Bank, it ran into a locomotive that was sitting idle at Brooklyn Station.
