This seems to confirm what I'm hearing from parents across US and what I am experiencing with my own child. There's very little instruction happening in many schools as ed has gone virtual.This makes me wonder how we can possibly be grading kids right now

My child is having to learn new math concepts via Khan Academy assignments -- and her teachers know I am a NYT reporter who writes about school inequality. I have interviewed parents in Louisiana who hadn't heard from their kids teachers since schools shuttered.

.@IBWellsSociety hosted a virtual training on how to cover education during Covid and my very first slide said the "Honeymoon is Over." It was understandable in March why children with internet access weren't getting virtual instruction. It was new, teachers had to figure it out.
But we are nearly two months in and school is in session even if they buildings are closed. There is no excuse why teachers cannot be offering some virtual instruction during the school day. The expectation should not be that they teach all day.That would be ridiculous/impossible
But I certainly think we should be expecting more than a bunch of online assignments being posted every day. Children cannot teach themselves math and science.

I've been trying to come up with sentences worthy of summing up how it felt to be awarded @PulitzerPrizes the same day as Ida B. Wells for a project I led on the legacy of slavery for the @nytimes, a newspaper that in 1894 called Wells a "slanderous and nasty-minded mulattress."
Everything I try to type out feels inadequate. I WOULD NOT BE without her. She never got the recognition she deserved when she was living, sometimes even from her own people. Black women who dared challenge the white narrative were mercilessly castigated.
90 years after her death, I know the same instinct to downplay lynching, to attack her credibility because it was easier than owning up the truth, is at play here. But I have long been a student of hers and Ida taught me well.
In other words, she fortified me for this.

When we think about reopening schools, suddenly those under-enrolled, half-empty schools start looking real attractive as we figure out how to social distance in the classroom. Think of what a remarkable tool for integration this could be as overcrowded schools need to spread out
In NYC, and across the country, low-income black and Latino schools sit half-empty while wealthier white schools are packed to the brims. We could start merging schools to allow more space in a way that integrates, something we should have been doing anyway.
Or, maybe we stay put and for once segregation will benefit black and brown kids who have far more room to space out in their half-empty schools. I mean good luck in those schools that are over-enrolled because white parents want to avoid the black neighborhood school.🤷🏽‍♀️

I so appreciate the way this reporter didn’t let him get away with his gaslighting when he first denied it was a Confederate flag, then said if it was,it was important for kids to be taught the history of what it stood for, asking “What does it stand for?” wlns.com/news/local-new…

I can’t let this go. We are in a global pandemic and he is a legislator in a state where black people are dying at the highest rate, and his wife decided to sew him a Confederate flag mask to wear to the legislature? As @AdamSerwer said so well: The cruelty is the point.
