Operation was limited by location of oil fueling facilities. Most service main North and North Coast lines, as well as in the Sydney metropolitan area.

The cost of running 59s was high relative to coal. No doubt a factor in conversion of 17 to coal in 1961.

Main role for D59s was freight but did do passenger work as required.
In 1969 I used to travel in the back of an Army truck between Wacol and Yeronga daily. I used to see a 59 at Clapham most days shunting.
