I was excited to receive the first 2 books in a historical fiction trilogy that tells the story of some of my ancestors fleeing the Inquisition from Belgium to Germany and from there to Barbados and Rhode Island. Exciting, but I don't think I can read it. The writing is bad
Not just a little bad. A lot bad. As in reading the first 2 paragraphs over and over and over and over and just being stopped dead by the awkward phrasing.
I had wondered if my 7th great-grandfather involved himself in the slave trade as he spent some years in Barbados around 1640, but it turned out he practiced medicine there. Not that there's any hint he was anti-slavery
I gave it another go, but it's execrable. Twelver year old is watching his mom shopping at the market (or the "progress of her purpose" to quote the book. Then he thinks "Food is an important element in the entertainment ritual."
