Why is it that GOP has “bail-out fatigue” at a moment—the worst public health crisis in a century and a looming Depression—when more government spending is absolutely necessary, but they never seem to get “tax cut fatigue,” no matter the circumstances? /1 nytimes.com/2020/05/09/bus…
There is more than a dime’s worst of difference between the parties: “Democrats want to continue to spend trillions an additional aid to people, companies and local governments, & to keep the assistance flowing until the economic data shows the country is well into recovery.” /2
GOP Motto: When the facts change, we propose the exact same thing as always: “Trump & Republicans want to shift government efforts toward relaxing restrictions and financing efforts they say will invigorate a reopened economy, like tax cuts and new business deductions.” /3
With unemployment over 20% and more than 75,000 dead from COVID-19 and no sign that either crisis is abated, Stephen Moore says, “All government can do right now is make things worse, not better.” /4
The Trump administration is “privately bracing for additional economic damage” and yet its action plan is to “[watch] how the economy reacts as states lift restrictions.” /5
Here’s another one for the “haven’t we seen this movie (and several sequels) before?” category: The White House and Republicans, who pushed through an unneeded trillion dollar gift to the wealthy and corporations, are now deeply concerned about a “ballooning federal deficit.” /6
The GOP, which has denigrated governing for decades, holds that government action for the non-rich always makes things worse, & believes that tax cuts & deregulation is an all-purpose economic policy agenda, is in charge of a crisis the undermines all of these assumptions./7
With no viable economic agenda what does that leave? Culture wars, xenophobia, faux populism, hollow paeons to “freedom,” metaphors of war, celebrations of risk (both of which will be actually experienced by the vulnerable), condemnations of the media, and denials of reality./8
Plus, charges of “socialism,” blame heaped on Governors, local officials, and fired administration scapegoats, and more white grievance protests. /9
