Attention: I have an update on the #HorrorTomatoes
I left one tomato on the counter a few extra weeks to see what would happen. The sprouts growing beneath the tomato skin broke through. You can even see the roots at the bottom! #HorrorTomatoes A bright red tomato with the vine attached. There are little green sprouts beneath the tomato skin and a few have broken through. Here’s what it looks like just under the skin. #HorrorTomatoes The flesh of the tomato is peeled away and the little green sprouts are seen curled up and starting to grow. I’m sorry to tell you it gets worse. #HorrorTomatoes The interior of the tomato beneath the flesh where the full sprouts and roots are beginning to be visible. I decided to invite some friends to watch the #HorrorTomatoes dissection. Thank you @DoctorFrenchie @RosemaryMosco & @THEKarlaPacheco for sharing my joy/disgust ❤️ Four Zoom windows. Lower right is Karla making a grossed-out face.Same as before but Helene and Rosemary are smiling a bit, I’m smiling a bit, and Karla is looking on with open-mouthed horror. You will be pleased to know that the previous #HorrorTomatoes are thriving and I expect great things from their newly planted brethren 🌱 Five lush green tomato plants lined up in pots next to a window. There's no indication from public health experts that the US is in a position to "reopen its economy" without hitting the gas on infection rates and deaths. Neither testing nor contact tracing programs are ready; rates are not appreciably declining. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Lockdowns got us to the point where the spread is most concentrated among service workers, factory workers, care homes, and incarcerated people. Deaths haven't slowed, but administration-backed politicians and business owners (wrongly) feel safe, and that's good enough for them.
The suffering is, and will continue to be, most strongly felt by people this administration cares about the least. They could invest in measures that would protect everyone, but it's become very clear that that's not their priority.

The gist: if there are extra dimensions of space (beyond the usual 3), then sometimes tiny black holes can form when particles collide at high energy. Those would quickly evaporate, but if they do so inside a big neutrino detector, they can produce distinct signatures in the data
(A quick note about authorship here: in particle physics, authorship is generally alphabetical, not a judgment of contributions. In this case, Ningqiang and Aaron really did the heavy lifting on the simulations and analysis. They are great collaborators to work with!)

Just to be clear, our Sun is not going to explode. What our Sun IS doing, all the time, is nuclear fusion: it’s pressing hydrogen nuclei together in its core until they join up to make helium. Fusion of hydrogen into helium produces energy, and that energy makes the Sun shine.
Nuclei, by the way, are the protons and neutrons (nucleons) stuck together in the centers of atoms. The number of protons a nucleus has tells you what kind of element it is (the atomic number); the number of protons + neutrons tells you the atomic mass.
