Our daily update is published. We’ve now tracked 9 million tests, up 278k from yesterday. The US logged 1.7 million tests this week.

Note that we can only track tests that a state reports.

Reported deaths were quite low—979—as they have been on Sundays and Mondays in recent weeks.

In this dataset, which does not include 5,178 probable COVID-19 deaths reported by New York City but not New York State, we've tracked 74,270 deaths.
Today's number of reported newly reported cases is one of the lowest since March.

A reminder that the falling national number is largely driven by the slowing of the outbreak in the NY Metro area. The situation is not consistent across the country.

And an important reminder: the story is very different in different regions of the country. Outside NY-NJ-CT, cases are not really declining.
One unusual situation: Mississippi testing is ~slowing~ as the state re-opens.

(For comparison, see neighboring states like Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas.)
Reposting the daily cases chart for clarity here... It was mislabeled in an earlier tweet.

Cases totals are drifting down, due to the improving situation in the NY metro area.

Still, the 25k newly reported cases represent more than 25% of the global total.

1,949 new deaths were reported by the states, in-line with the mid-week death toll over the last month.
Daily newly reported cases appear to be on a new, slightly lower plateau around ~22k cases per day.

A reminder: the case reporting is *probably* lagging new infections by a week or so.

This is the second day in a row in which the positive rate was below 10%. For most of April, we were at or near 20%.

That said, the absolute number of new cases has not fallen as much.

States reported 22k new cases today.
The reported death toll was very high today: 2,527, one of the three highest days of the outbreak.

Some of that is due to a large data reconciliation in Pennsylvania which resulted in the state reporting 554 deaths today.
