The only reason we're arguing about whether the country should be reopened even though it means thousands of unnecessary deaths and destruction is because the wealthy and powerful don't want to talk about how to make our society and economy more fair and humane.

We can endure a lengthened shutdown if the people in charge of protecting us and making our country better would be willing to discuss how to distribute aid and actually create a workable, scientifically-sound plan.
But they won't. They refuse.

The sad truth is that even if the country were to be reopened to save the economy it would STILL result in the economy cratering when the pandemic overtook us.

"Reopening America" is a false dichotomy, a means of distraction by people who see callously tossing Americans into the jaws of a pandemic as their only remaining move in the face of vast social and political change.
