A late night source thread for my good and old friend @RichardArbuckle. Not that he is old, but that our friendship is old.

Ambiguity generates anxiety because we need solid ground upon which to form our ideas, plans, security and well being.

1/
But ambiguity strips us of all of that - plans, certainty, knowledge....ambiguity strips us of control.

There is an upside, as there often is....

2/
Ambiguity invites us to deeper faith, deeper trust.

Confession: I find it more difficult to follow the invisible, intangible God. Easier to follow my own plans, my own veneer thin illusion of control.

3/
In the wonderful words of Rich Mullins, ambiguity 'shakes us forward and shakes us free' and invites us to the faith 'that I don't know if I am climbing to or falling in.'

Faith and doubt aren't opposites. Faith and knowledge are.

4/
There are things we know, there are things we take on faith. Ambiguity invites us to move things from column A to column B. The things we thought we know for sure, become things we question.

5/
We are in a long marathon of ambiguity with COVID. It taxes leaders who feel a need to know, and makes people anxious who want certainty and answers.

And, it should be noted, it generates genuine grief for things lost and 'what could have been.'
