This shocked but did not altogether surprise me.

It's remarkable and scary how often some young, bright-eyed student gets up at one of my talks, and asks me whether we should sacrifice democracy to save the planet.
Interestingly, this happens WAY more frequently in Europe than in America. Would love to see a similar poll for the United States.

A few people have asked me what I think about the decision of the New York Times to run that op-ed by Tom Cotton.

I fear my answer won't please anyone. But I hope it's worth articulating because it gets to some larger questions about how publications define themselves.

The basic job of the NYT op-ed page is to allocate the most coveted platform in journalism. What principle should drive that selection?

There are two broad answers.
1) Articles that best articulate the views of people committed to a set of basic values.

2) Opinions that must be taken seriously, either because they are novel and insightful *or* because the people who express them are sufficiently significant that we can't ignore them.

* We can use this moment to achieve great things. 
* We can protect the country from the leader.
* The opposition is worse.
* I must remain close to power.
* I will benefit.
* LOL nothing matters.

Anne draws on Stanley Hoffmann's work.

Stanley was a great scholar of collaboration and one of the best teachers I ever had. More importantly, he always had the bravery to stand up for his values, even as his mind started to fade.

A small ray of light at the end of a very bleak week:

89% (!) of Americans believe either that the charges against Derek Chauvin are appropriate, or that he should have been charged with a *more* serious crime.
(Full disclosure: In an earlier tweet, which I've now deleted, I misread one of the digits on the poll, and gave a wrong total. Reposted here with the correct total.)
A few other heartening findings:

A clear majority of Americans recognizes that there is a real problem with lack of accountability for police misconduct.
