Let's talk about the preposterous, ridiculous "Trump is winning" narrative.

BLUF: Trump is losing. Bigly. WE are the champions, my friends.

[THREAD] Image
1/ “History is written by the winners,” AG Barr said, when asked how history would recall his decision to drop the charges against convicted felon and traitor Michael Flynn, “so it largely depends on who is writing the history.”
2/ Given the trauma that Trump & co. have inflicted on the American people these last 3 years, one might be forgiven for reading Barr’s comment as sinister gloating rather than what it is: a sad, desperate attempt to shape the narrative by an owned man who knows he’s going down.
3/ This motley collection of limp-d!ck losers will not prevail. And yet the “despair deza” is pervasive, the sad surrender to Trump and his despotic lickspittles. You see it all the time on social media.
4/ We think that Jared Kushner is going to beat us? Really? We believe that Ivanka and Don Junior are going to succeed their idiot father in some sort of royalist succession plan?
5/ Yesterday, a humiliated Trump was chased off the podium by an earnest White House correspondent. That’s the great champion? The loser who kills everything he touches? Please.
6/ The truth of the matter is that there HAS been a lot of winning—by the good guys. By Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff, by Alexander Vindman and Maria Yovanovich, by Jim Comey and Robert Mueller, by Kamala Harris and Katie Porter, by you and me.
7/ Yes, Trump remains in office. I am aware. But survival is not the same thing as triumph.
8/ We are dealing with villains who are unthinkably, unspeakably powerful. They control their asset in the White House, his family members, his cabinet, and enough of his political party to have majority ownership. They control a sizable hunk of the media, including social media.
9/ So, yes, I understand the naysayers. I understand the compunction to give up hope (especially when a cottage industry of podcasters is encouraging us to do so). I feel the exhaustion, the frustration, the rage, the exasperation—I feel the f—king grief. I get it. I do.
10/ And yet. And yet.

Look at all the forces stacked up against us. And look—marvel, really—at how much we’ve managed to accomplish, in spite of those obstacles:
11/ We got a Justice Department headed by Jeff F-cking Sessions, the Confederate Keebler Elf, to appoint a Special Counsel. Said Special Counsel produced what is, effectively, an ironclad 700-page indictment of Trump and his minions.
12/ The Mueller Report is the metaphorical loaded gun in this little Chekhov play, and it WILL go off before the curtain falls.
13/ We took the motherf-cking House, in a Blue Wave for the ages. We elected Nancy Pelosi Speaker of that House. Adam Schiff took over as chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, replacing the corrupt & implicated Devin Nunes.
14/ We chased Paul Ryan and Jason Chaffetz and Trey Gowdy out of government. We exposed Lindsey Graham, Rand Paul, and the Fourth of July Traitors.
15/ We indicted Duncan Hunter and Chris Collins, early Trump boosters in Congress, and removed them from office.
16/ We imprisoned Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, and George Papadopoulos, and convicted Mike Flynn and Roger Stone—all key Trump associates.
17/ We’ve kept the Supreme Court busy with Trump-related cases that will soon see the release of redactions to the Mueller Report, as well as the Mazars and Deutsche Bank documents—all damning for Trump.
18/ We witnessed the fall of Les Moonves and Bill O’Reilly, Andy Lack and Matt Lauer, Chris Matthews and Charlie Rose, Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein.
19/ We refused to let Trump lift the sanctions on the Russian oligarchs.

And lest we forget, we won the 2016 popular vote by 2.8 million.
20/ Now we will rally behind Joe Biden—if not our preferred choice among the Dem hopefuls, certainly not Moscow’s—and we will win the White House, keep the House, turn the Senate blue. And neither plague nor voter suppression laws nor Russian f-ckery will keep us from the polls.
21/ But we won’t stop there. In 2021 and beyond, we won’t rest until justice is served—until every last one of the Trumpist collaborators pays for his or her crimes.
22/ There will be no pardons. There will be no “turn the page.” There will be no quarter. There will be indictments, convictions, long prison terms, asset forfeiture. And we will enact new laws to safeguard the republic, and make sure nothing like this ever happens again.
23/ Has this been an easy three years? No. Have there been setbacks? Yes. Are people dead because of Donald John Trump and his mob overlords? Tens of thousands have fallen, needlessly. I’m not trying to sugarcoat the sodden urinal cake that the country has become on his watch.
24/ Things are, by any metric, bad—but nor are they hopeless. In six months, we will vote him out. In eight months, if not sooner, he’ll be gone. And then it will be our turn to right the ship, and write the history, and wipe the smirk off traitor Barr’s haughty face.
Now is not the time to lose hope. The enemy is on the ropes, and we must keep up the fight. The future is ours. Let’s take it.

WE SHALL PREVAIL!!!

I. The “Cowboy Catholic”

Like many leaders of the reactionary right—Mike Johnson, Mike Davis, Stephen Miller, and so on—the current head of the Heritage Foundation has a dull, forgettable name: Kevin Roberts.

[THREAD] Image
2/ Roberts has a winsome smile, a PhD in U.S. history, a background in academia, & a well-earned reputation as a nice guy. Who could have imagined that this bright, friendly Gen Xer would be leading a Christian conservative counter-reformation—a crusade to end American democracy?
3/ In 2013, Roberts, who is Catholic, became the second president of Wyoming Catholic College, a strict, almost monastic institution est. in 2007 that provides “a rigorous immersion in...the spiritual heritage of the Catholic Church”—and that will throw you out if you hook up.

If action is character, as F. Scott Fitzgerald proposed, then it is instructive to look at the life of Tucker Swanson McNear Carlson in reverse, Benjamin Button style. . .

[THREAD]
1/ It is the night before Veteran’s Day, 2021. On his primetime Fox News program, Tucker Carlson argues that the U.S. should back Russia, and not Ukraine, in the escalating conflict between the two countries. “Why would we take Ukraine’s side and not Russia’s side?”
2/ He insists that choosing Putin’s dictatorship over Zelensky’s democracy is a no-brainer because of “energy reserves.” This is either breathtaking ignorance of the region’s history or straight-up Kremlin propaganda. Or, I suppose, both.

Should the media try to present Elise Stefanik (R-Machiavelli) as a moderate, throwback, Paul Ryan Republican and not the ruthless, power-mad opportunist in league with Dear Leader Donald that she is, please consider her career trajectory:

Last week, Leonard Leo’s Supreme Court handed down a bevy of wretched decisions that are now the law of the land. These decisions have two things in common: All of them will cause more harm than good. And all of them are wins for Leonard Leo.

[THREAD]
2/ As many legal scholars have pointed out, the internal logic of the Leonard Leo Court is functionally nonexistent. Nothing holds. There is no rhyme or reason to these decisions.
3/ The Leonard Leo judges will dredge up some anti-witchcraft statute from medieval England, while ignoring the last 50 years of settled law in the here and now; “Starry Decisis” may as well be Sam Alito’s drag name.

#WPJWJT?

(Whose Private Jet Would Jesus Take?)

Alito's corrupt behavior is matched only by his sneering arrogance.

This @propublica article is something. Among the choice quotes:

"On June 9, Arkley’s group [which included Alito] chartered a boat, the Happy Hooker IV, to tour Yakutat Bay."
@propublica Leonard Leo, a Knight of Malta-level gaslighter, called the ProPublica piece “bait for reeling in more dark money from woke billionaires who want to damage this Supreme Court..." (b/c there are SO MANY woke billionaires)
