I'm obsessed with #HCI research that involves the Wii—yes, the 2006 Nintendo game console!

There are thousands of papers that used the Wii in novel, sometimes weird, research applications & I've been digging through a few of them so here's a thread!

First up is (by my estimate) the most famous use of Wii hardware by an HCI researcher—@JohnnyChungLee's 3 Wii projects:
- a VR head tracking system
- turning any table into an interactive whiteboard
- a finger tracking system

This is all from 2007!

Johnny Lee (et al.) later published “Foldable Interactive Displays”(2008) allowing the Wii to track arbitrary surfaces using real-time projection mapping

e.g. The GIF below is just a big folded piece of paper!

Along the same lines of using the Wii for novel interactions is "Gesture Recognition with a Wii Controller" (2008). My favorite part of this paper is using a Hidden Markov Model to achieve fantastic filtering from the Wiimote's accelerometer!

"WiiPaint++" (2010) is exactly what it sounds like — using the Wii as kind of magical laser pointer to paint! The color selector is a delight — it's a quantized HSL cube! Spatial color UI for a spatial medium :)

Combining two early-2000's era technologies is "WiiRobot" (2009)! The result is a Wii controller that can command an iRobot Create (basically a stripped down Roomba) to move in certain patterns! It's like a Logo turtle IRL :D

"Towards Affordable Gesture Based Interfaces" extends Lee's work to create a Wii with finger-based, mid-air gestures!

The authors note Wiisearchers "use MATLAB for camera calibration and resolving points in 3D space", bringing us to the last paper...

"WiiLab: Bringing Together the Nintendo Wiimote and MATLAB" (2009) was an attempt to introduce beginning engineering students to programming in a fun way by building a MATLAB library allowing the use of the Wiimote for input!

Honorary mention: @Lady_Ada_King's use of a pink Wiimote as a presentation controller is the kind of inventiveness I aspire to!!
