South Korea: test our way out with a competent state
Snow Crash: exit our way out, everyone implements their own controls
Soviet Union: no way out, just crash the economy without controlling the virus
- Price controls
- Random bans on "nonessential" goods
- Seizures of sanitizer & masks
- Indefinite house arrest
- Release criminals, create political criminals
1) The virus is actually serious and has high morbidity & mortality
2) Other states have gotten it under control and will have better economies & healthier populations in the long-run
3) The US government lacks the state capacity to control the virus
So, Snow Crash?
"lockdown for just-the-flu is crashing our economy"
2) Some understand biology but not economics
"stay at home forever, cargo cult lockdown + no plan"
Neither of these viewpoints will be treated well by history. Both issues are real.
