#Chhatrapati Sambhaji , when aged just २५-२६ had to face three opponents - Mughals , Portuguese and Siddi of Janjira

Over ८० battles were fought in next ९ yrs by him.

Portuguese - Red, Siddi - Blue , Green - Mughal
During his time, just the singular fortress of Ramsej staved off Mughal attacks for ६ years.

It was a warning sign for Aurangzeb.

Killedar of Ramsej was handsomely rewarded by Chhatrapati Sambhaji

By him in the sense, by Marathas.

Under able guidance of हंबीरराव मोहिते and येसाजी कंक
Chhatrapati Sambhaji had to face a Mughal army, which counting ancillary forces etc amounted to 5 lakh men.

One of the largest to assemble at one place in the medieval age , world wide !
Adil Shahi of Bijapur and Kutub Shahi of Golconda both disappeared under the Mughal onslaught , being annexed in 1686 and 1688.But the Marathas held firm, in face of opposition led by Aurangzeb himself.
He battled not only Mughals but also the Portuguese.

The Maratha Navy fought a series of battles , including one at Elephanta Island.
The Mughal camp near Aurangabad occupied an area with a circumference of 25-30 miles ! An entire town with over 5 lakh inhabitants !
Chhatrapati Sambhaji was unfortunately captured at Sangameshwar.

Aurangzeb finally had the Maratha king in his grasp.

The Mughal emperor was already 60 when Chhatrapati Sambhaji ascended the throne. Half his age and none of his experience.

And he had fought 9 years !
Aurangzeb perhaps knew history and how the Hindu mind had worked in the past.

Why, just a century previously, at the battle of Talikota, Rama Raya was beheaded and his skull displayed on spear. The Vijayanagar army despaired and gave up.

Similar with Hemchandra Vikramaditya.
So Chhatrapati Sambhaji was taken to Tulapur and made to wear a clown's costume with a matching hat. Then he was paraded on a camel with drums and trumpets beating in the Mughal camp.
Then he was blinded, his tongue cut off and starved for days on end in the sweltering heat of March.

Finally he was beheaded and the village warned that no final rites were to take place.

The head was then paraded through the major towns and forts - to demoralise everyone.
But his martyrdom had the opposite effect. The whole of the Marathas put aside their differences and united against the Mughal with greater fervour
