Am becoming increasingly irritated by the use of the term 'gotcha journalism' and, yesterday, 'gotcha questioning' (re Keir Starmer at PMQs).

Does anyone have a credible definition? 1/
It seems to be used to criticise any questioning about mistakes in the past.

The Govt says 'we took the right steps at the right time and followed the science'.

A critic says... no you didn't, look at this.

And the critic is condemned. 2/
There seems to be a desire to stop interrogation of the Govt. Instead, it is said that journalists (and also the opposition) should be more supportive and optimistic.

The idea that rigorous scrutiny can (and does) improve decision-making seems to have been lost. 3/3
PS: I just put gotcha journalism into the twitter search box.

Among those complaining about it in the last month on twitter are Darren Grimes, Dan Hannan, Toby Young, Rupert Lowe, Konstantin Kisin, Jacob Young and Claire Fox.

Just saying.
