Public buildings in Greece reopened to people today. Here’s a British friend’s experience of a local utility co:

“Visited ΔΕΗ offices in town yesterday - I wasn't allowed through the door until I'd donned my mask - then I had to sanitise my hands... 1/3
“The woman at the desk wore a mask and gloves and was behind a perspex screen - she took my temperature before we could proceed - after my query had been (successfully) dealt with, I was asked for an easy contact number in case there was any need for contact tracing... 2/3
“I was actually quite impressed - shame the UK didn't institute some of this...“

I know some of you will scoff; find this ridiculous and disproportionate, but anyone local I speak to, doesn’t agree. It protects the worker and the client. It makes us feel safe. We all get it. 3/3

I genuinely don’t know how much more I could have caveated this to say THIS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

The reaction is just hysterical. It’s basically “I haven’t been really angry about anything today, so I’m gonna assume you’re talking about me specifically and become very irate.”
I get it ffs. BOY do I get it. Everyone’s life is extra hard right now. But there is a way of looking at what you HAVE. And if you still have a full time job, you can do from home, and your entire family healthy and locked with you, you ARE NOT THE WORSE-HIT GROUP in this crisis.
That’s just a fucking fact. Millions would love to still have an income coming in, from a full time job they can do from home, and others - tragically - would give anything to have the loved ones they’ve lost, locked in with them and driving them crazy. So SOME PERSPECTIVE.

Thirty-three London bus drivers have died from #Covid19. It may seem an acceptable risk to you to extend that to teachers, but it‘s their life. You have no right to demand death-defying heroism of them. It’s not part of their job. And their union has every right to protect them.
If your argument is one of ‘fairness’ - I’ve seen some musing: nurses, shelf stackers, bank clerks and posties have to risk their life and work; why not teachers? - it’s misconceived. Adding more bodies to transport, pushing R up, is not fairer for essential workers, but RISKIER.
My partner is an essential worker and, lemme tell ya, a packed tube doesn’t make him feel less hard done-by. It makes him feel unsafe.

Not as depressing as the segment of society that seems unable to get its head around the idea that cancer or dying in a road traffic accident are not contagious.

I wonder whether your attitude would be similarly laissez-faire about a local restaurant that gave you salmonella.
Living with it necessarily involves understanding how deadly it is, how it’s passed on and how we can impede it.

Nihilistic “we’ll all die of something; let’s just get back to normal” takes, actively undermine learning how to live with a new disease.

Not to mention that we exist in a global community. If the UK continues to be seen as an outlier, pariah nation that simply failed to grasp this in any serious way, fewer people will do business with us or want to visit (many underestimate the importance of inbound tourism).
