Have been working with a sensemaking group on Covid-19 and food security last few weeks. We chose to focus on Nigeria as the situation is especially challenging with oil economy, security, bungled lockdown, vulnerable supply chain etc. Here is our report docs.google.com/document/d/1PZ…
Covid-19 and it's 2nd and 3rd order consequences are far too complex to grasp and most institutions and governments built in the post industrial age are ill equipped to do any sensemaking. This requires a different approach, one that is distributed, coherent and has discernment
A new movement is emerging with the likes of Daniel Schmachtenberger, Jordan Hall, Jamie Wheal, Vervaeke etc. driving a different conversation sovereignty, discernment, meaning which puts scaffolding around solving complex problems like existential risk
Forums like thestoa.ca, @FutureThinkers and
@WisdomRebel are helping like-minded individuals connect & cut through the divisive culture wars, polarized politics, and vicious online underbelly. Amidst the Covid chaos these provide shelter and a beacon for the future
Covid pandemic is a hyperobject (Stein, Morton) something too complex to solve, not the virus but the 2nd and 3rd order effects that are rippling through our world. The Nigeria situational assessment is a tiny step towards reaching for that hyperobject
As Jordan Hall says, now is the time of Kairos (Greek notion of being at a turning point) having left Chronos ( linear time) behind. Another framework is the liminal space or the time between two worlds. Now is the time to act
My own journey into this report is an embodiment of many of the principles that I have been uncovering for the last 12-18 months, mainly around sensemaking, discernment, coherence, #GameB and existential risk in general. The move into Kairos has helped ground them for me.
The goal is to now spread the report far and wide, especially to individuals within governments and institutions that have the power to make objective changes on the ground.
While the decision & sensemaking apparatus of institutions and governments is rapidly disintegrating, many individuals within these structures are taking up sovereignty and getting shit done. If we can make this happen in the Nigerian context that would be awesome
We are also looking to disseminate across to journalists and bloggers who can spread the word, but also to tech entrepreneurs, tech companies, VCs, startups who can help on any of the issues that Nigeria is facing
Also hope is that the Nigeria report is a useful starting framework for rapidly zooming in similar countries and providing a situational assessment on the hyperobject of Covid as it transects the crumbling meta politics and economics of the post-industrial age.
Please get in touch if you are interested in doing similar work or would like to help in general
